Locked out

Safely, right now

  1. Wait somewhere safe and warm: a neighbour's, your car, a coffee shop.
  2. Don't force a window or the door; it only adds a repair.
  3. Keep ID that shows your address handy if it is with you.

Key broke in the lock

Safely, right now

  1. Don't push the broken piece back in or try the lock again.
  2. Keep the piece you still have. It helps cut a new key.

Lock won't turn

Safely, right now

  1. Don't force the key. A bent or broken key makes it harder.
  2. Don't spray oil or glue into it, and don't pour hot water on it in the cold.

Lost keys

Safely, right now

  1. Keys lost together with your address? Assume someone could use them.
  2. Don't hide a spare key anywhere outside in the meantime, not even under the mat.

A door that latches on the first push, a deadbolt that throws fully into the frame, a key that slides in without a wiggle. These small things add up to a home in Teeterville that feels secure every time you close the door behind you. We fuss over them so you never have to. This page also covers Bookton, Kelvin, La Salette, Ranelagh, Vanessa, Brown's Corners and Hawtrey.

What is the door doing?

EmergencyHome Lockout ServiceSomeone pushed the privacy button on the bathroom door and pulled it shut behind them, leaving the room locked and empty.

The fix

Being locked out is uncomfortable, but it is also the moment most households finally sort out their keys. Once the door is open, the same visit can rekey the locks so a lost key stops mattering, cut properly coded spares to replace worn copies, key the front and back doors alike so one key runs the house, or set up a small…

EmergencyBusiness Lockout ServiceAfter last night's power flicker the card reader beside the clinic door shows nothing.

The fix

A business lockout service reopens commercial premises when the door is locked and nobody on site can open it. The locksmith begins by confirming that the person asking for entry has authority to act for the business, through identification and a document or a phone call that ties them to the premises.

EmergencyBroken Key ExtractionThe key went in like any other morning, you turned it, and something gave with a small metallic click.

The fix

Keys break for a reason, and finding that reason is half the visit. A brass key wears thinnest at its deepest cut, and after years of turning it fatigues there until a cold morning or a stiff bolt finishes it.

The fix

There are really two jobs inside one call. The first is tonight: make the door close and lock so the household can sleep.

EmergencySeized & Jammed Lock OpeningThe shop's lever handle goes down as usual, but the latch inside the mortise case never pulls back.

The fix

Most seized locks can be saved, and keeping your existing hardware is the aim. A cylinder that has stopped turning is usually recoverable with cleaning and fresh internal parts.

EmergencyLost Keys — Same-Visit RekeyYour purse was taken from the back of a chair at a restaurant.

The fix

How much a lost key matters depends on what was lost with it. A ring that dropped into a lake on a canoe trip tells nobody where it fits, so the rekey is a tidy precaution.

    Deciding what to replace

We look at the existing lock, the door thickness and the holes already drilled. Sometimes a new cylinder is enough; sometimes the whole lockset has earned its retirement.

    Checking fit and finish

Fitting the new hardware. The new lock goes in with the strike adjusted so the bolt throws fully. If the old holes need filling or enlarging, that is done neatly.

Checking fit and finish. We test the lock with the door open and closed, from both sides, check the key turns without effort and clean up the doorstep before leaving.

What the census means at the door

62%

Older homes. About 62% of homes in Norfolk County were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Established homes often have non-standard bores and backsets from an earlier generation of hardware. A locksmith working in such an area carries adapter plates and cylinders in the older sizes, so an upgrade fits the existing door instead of forcing a new one.

83%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 83% of homes in Norfolk County (2021 Census).

Garage entry doors on detached houses are often the household's real front door, used more than the formal entry. They deserve the same quality of lock, and keying them alike with the house means one key does the whole daily routine.

Every key we cut in Teeterville is tested in the lock it belongs to before we leave. It sounds obvious, but a key that works on the bench and sticks in the door is a common complaint about lock work. We turn each one, from both sides where the door allows, and adjust the cut or the cylinder until every key slides in and turns cleanly.

  • Explained first, always. Nothing gets removed, drilled or replaced until you know what and why. That rule holds for a small job as much as a full afternoon.

  • Hardware chosen with you. We show what we recommend and what else would do the job, and describe the differences in plain terms. You make the call.

  • Care for the finish. We match hardware finishes where we can, protect the door surface while working and leave no scuffs, filings or fingerprints behind.

Questions people ask us

Advice · (226) 641-0178

The thumb-turn is stuck from inside and we need that door to get out. What should we do?

Use another exit for now and call. From the inside the fault is usually a bolt pinned by the frame or a bent spindle, both of which the locksmith frees without damage. A main exit door should open from inside without a key or special knowledge, so the repair leaves the door doing exactly that, and if the hardware on it was the wrong type for an exit, a thumb-turn deadbolt is suggested.

What exactly does rekeying a lock change?

What changes depends on the cylinder. Many locks turn when a row of small bottom pins lines up at a precise level, set by the cuts on your key, and during a rekey the locksmith tips those pins out and loads a set that lines up with a different key, cut new for you; some residential cylinders instead reset a side-locking bar without removing any pins. From then on the new key operates the lock and older keys do not, and the hardware on the door stays as it was.

Can you replace the lock on a sliding patio door or French doors?

Yes. Sliding doors take a replacement mortise hook lock sized to the rail, often with a keyed exterior, and benefit from a secondary foot bolt or a pin through the frames. French doors are secured by treating the inactive leaf properly with flush bolts into the head and sill, then fitting a deadbolt to the active leaf with a strike into that reinforced edge. Both are routine parts of a residential upgrade.

If the lock gets replaced, can the existing intercom or buzzer stay?

In most cases, yes. The buzzer, keypad and intercom are generally separate from the mechanical lock or cylinder, so replacing the lock itself does not usually mean replacing the electronic side too. Where the two are connected, such as an electric strike wired to the same frame as a new mechanical lock, the locksmith checks the fit and wiring before starting so the electronic system keeps working once the new hardware is in place. Anything that would need to change is explained beforehand.
